How to hire a Wedding Photographer!

I believe that hiring the right wedding photographer is one of the most important decisions you can make during the wedding planning process and so I wanted to share some advice. Regardless of your wedding location, or photographic style you’re interested in, I’m breaking it down so you can find the most talented and professional photographer that fits into your budget.

Ultimately you want to hire a photographer that you can trust, that you feel really comfortable with and enjoy being around. If you don’t feel relaxed or trust your wedding pros your photos are absolutely going to reflect that AND you’re investing a lot of money and deserve to have the best experience from beginning to end.

Step 1.

Search on google/ pinterest/ friends weddings albums online and find out what type of photography you’re drawn to and excited about. You don’t have to create a board or anything but just really think about what you like.

Step 2.

Decide on your budget range and set the date. There is no point contacting anyone until your date is set in stone.

Step 3.

Gather all the photographers your planner, friends, and wedding venue have recommended and spend some time on their websites. From those select the ones who’s images you’re drawn to. Do you like the way they edit? Are you drawn to their style? Maybe more importantly does their website look consistent, show work at multiple venues and do their clients look comfortable in their photos?

Step 4.

Send out inquiries and find out if they’re available on your date and learn about their pricing. Notice how long it takes for them to reply and how they respond, you’re trying to hire a professional that you can trust.

Step 5.

If they’re available and fit into your budget set up a phone call or meeting in person. Remember these people are going to be right there in your personal space on the day, you need to get along. Get to know each other a bit, make sure conversation is easy and you have a good connection, they’re confident in their own abilities and find out about what they’re passionate about.

5 Important questions and 1 Request

to ask during the initial meeting that will weed out the less experienced.

  1. How many years have you been a wedding photographer and can you tell me a little bit about your approach on the day.

This helps gather information about their team and how you and your guests will feel around them.

  2. How many camera’s do you shoot with and what type of lighting do you use?

They should have back-up cameras, that shoot to multiple card slots so that they are prepared if something goes wrong or anything gets damaged. They should also be able to use a flash and know what ‘off camera’ lighting is.

  3. Do you have insurance?

Most Venues require up to a million dollars of liability insurance.

  4. What will happen if for some reason you can’t shoot my wedding due to an emergency? Has this every happened before?

You have to have know what would happen to your money in these scenarios too.

  5. What do you do with the files after you shoot?

This is kind of a loaded question but … Do they back everything up? Will you have access to them for a year or more? How do you get your photos? Are they hosted in an online gallery and when will that be delivered? Can you download them?

Request to see 2-3 full wedding galleries!

This is literally the most important request as anyone can put their best work on a website. You need to see a full gallery to see how they handle all types of light, bright sunny situations and dark receptions spaces etc.

The last piece of advice I will share may be obvious but READ THEIR GOOGLE REVIEWS, do they have a great reputation? Ask other vendors that you’re working with if they enjoy working with them and are you investing wisely?

Bottom line spend the time and do your homework a bit and you’ll be so glad you did!

Happy Wedding Planning!

Jenna + Mike Wedding | Biltmore Estate in Asheville, NC

Hurricane Florence wasn’t invited to Jenna and Mike’s wedding but when she showed up, they were determined not to let a little rain ruin their big day! They brought clear umbrellas and rain boots for everyone and just embraced the elements.

Lioncrest was beautifully decorated and Two Sweet Sparrows and The Bloom Room did an incredible job pulling Jenna and Mike’s vision together. There were so many thoughtful details, including their pup on the koozies :)

Rainy days can be some of the most romantic of wedding days and this was hands down one of our favorite weddings of 2018 despite that hurricane!

I’ve thoroughly enjoyed getting to know Meagan the editor of The Asheville Scout Guide. She is on a mission to bring incredible local businesses together and has not only published two gorgeous guides, she’s created an amazing community that I’m excited to be apart of. We’re starting to shoot Volume 3 of the TSG but here’s me on the other side of the lens for a change. Check out the recent blog post to read more.

Big Thanks to my sweet friends Joanna of Powder me Pretty and Anastasiia for making me look good!!!

Engagement Session in River Arts District | Asheville, NC

We were fortunate to be a part of Haiku I Do’s Couture Collective this spring with so many amazing Asheville wedding vendors like Turner and Co. and Angela Kim Couture to name a couple. We also met some awesome couples. Enter Janae + Joe!

Janae + Joe were the winners of our engagement session giveaway! We had such a great time with them during their session! I mean, that mustache and those smiles!!!

Congratulations guys! We wish you all the best and many, many years of wedded bliss- keep having fun!

Shea + Blake | A Summer Engagement Session at Biltmore

Shea and Blake are tying the knot in Telluride, CO next year but they wanted to do their engagement session in the mountains where they met. These guys spend all of their spare time hiking and being outdoors and I half expected them to show up in base ball caps and hiking gear. As soon as I saw Shea's dress I knew it would look incredible on film and I'm dying over these yellow and green tones. These guys seriously rocked their session, I'm filing these images under what to wear for an engagement session!

Asheville Anniversary Session at Craggy Gardens

Kelly + Scott hired me to take some anniversary portraits at one of their favorite locations in North Carolina before they made the move to the west coast. We ended up shooting their session a little earlier in the day than expected, due to travel plans and some anticipated afternoon thunderstorms. I typically shoot in the late afternoon, when it's a little cooler and hope for some golden hour but it was such a refreshing change to be on top of Craggy in the middle of the day. The weather was perfect, the rhododendrons were starting to bloom and I love how the images turned out, particularly the blues in the bright sunlight.

A Destination Wedding in Charleston, South Carolina

"A good time occurs precisely when we lose track of what time it is." ~ Robert Farrah Capon

I'm pretty pumped when I get the opportunity to combine work and travel and especially to Charleston, one of my favorite cities in the US. Megan found out about me from her Maid-of-Honor who met and became friends with one of my brides on their honeymoon last year. How awesome is that? Take that google! There is still more power in the word of mouth. Anyway enough about that; Lets get to Megan and Andrew's gorgeous wedding details. If you're interested check out the vendor list at the bottom but in the meantime here's some highlights. Megan is an amazing artist and so of course designed all of her own paper goods and invitation suite. Most of their guests were coming from a far and so they rented entire houses down town for the guys and girls to get ready in. We hit The Battery for portraits and travelled in a cool vintage bus over to the Ceremony at The Francis Marion hotel. The party continued at the infamous Edmunds Oast (where I didn't try the beer obviously but the fried chicken was the best to be had). The bag-piper was a dear friend and played during the ceremony as well as the final sparkler-lit exit! The biggest hit however at the reception aside from the DJ was the Donut wall.

Thanks for inviting us along Megan + Andrew we had such a great time!

2016 | North Carolina Wedding Photographer

Putting these images together sort of feels like making a mixed tape for a friend! I'm not sure which order to put them in, or how many to include, I just want you to love them as much as I enjoyed taking them all. 2016 was lovely! We laughed, wore leis, threw snow balls, had babies, enjoyed fire-works, exchanged vows, chose to dance when it rained and toasted to the good times ahead!

I've said it before (and know I'll say it again) but it is an absolute privilege to be invited into these precious moments of my clients lives. Thank you for making me one of the girls, welcoming me in like family, hiking up mountains and making sure I'm well-fed/watered during those long summer weddings! I danced with you guys, cried during speeches and will be forever grateful for the experiences we've shared!

{Big THANK YOU to Bren, Abby, Olivia, Courtney, Lindsey and Steph for all of your mad shooting and film-rolling skills - I love you girls and couldn't have made it through without you. xoxox}
